WASHINGTON, DC—The American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) has added the Center for Academic and Intellectual Freedom (CAIF) at Northern Michigan University to the Oases of Excellence network.
The Center joins a network of faculty-led, donor funded programs and initiatives located across the country. Oases of Excellence programs share ACTA’s commitment to educating students for informed citizenship in a free society by maintaining the highest academic standards, introducing students to the best of the foundational arts and sciences, teaching American heritage, and ensuring free inquiry into a range of intellectual viewpoints.
The Center for Academic and Intellectual Freedom hosts talks and special seminars by extraordinary scholars and outstanding public intellectuals from around the world. It offers faculty and student fellowships to exceptional individuals whose research advances what Alexis de Tocqueville called “the art of being free.” Professor Gabriel Noah Brahm, the Center’s founding director, hosts the Public Liberty Podcast (with co-host Timothy Eggert, an Undergraduate Fellow at the Center) and also publishes a public affairs blog on CAIF’s website. The Center is currently in its second full year of operations, with plans to expand into the future.
“The success of Oases of Excellence programs have proven that college students are craving an intellectually diverse, high-quality education. I want to thank Dr. Brahm for so ably addressing that academic imperative at Northern Michigan,” says ACTA President Michael Poliakoff.
