Robert T. Lewit, M.D.

Robert T. Lewit served as ACTA’s chairman from May 2009 to April 2019. He was elected treasurer of the Board of Directors in April 2019, a role he previously filled from 2004-2009. From his days as a history major at Harvard, he has studied and valued what was unique in America’s history and mission. He has actively supported petition candidates to the Harvard Board of Overseers and has urged the return of ROTC to the Harvard campus. Promoting higher education reform at ACTA was a perfect match for his commitment, energy, and talents.

After graduating from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Lewit took a residency in psychiatry at Harvard’s Massachusetts Mental Health Center. In 1967, his Public Health Service commitment brought him to Washington. He was assigned to the National Institutes of Mental Health on detail to the Office of Economic Opportunity and served as the Medical Director of the Volunteers in Service to America.

Beginning in 1969, Dr. Lewit practiced adult psychiatry at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington and served as medical director of an inpatient unit. Administratively, he rose to the position of chief executive officer of Metropolitan Psychiatric Group (MPG) and held that position from 1977 to 1994.

In 1994, the MPG practice became part of a larger medical practice corporation, and Dr. Lewit returned to full-time clinical work in his adopted subspecialty of Sleep Disorders Medicine. He served as the medical director of the National Capital Sleep Center at Suburban Hospital from 1990 until his retirement in 2004.
